Newspapers are a great source of information. Newspapers contain information about

events in our ancestors lives: births, marriages, deaths, bankruptcies, emigrations, and

participation in events. There is an incredible amount of newspaper information that can

 be accessed on the Internet.

The purpose of this webpage is to show what's available and techniques to effectively use this information.

“BadgerLink is a project of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), Division for Libraries,

Technology, and Community Learning.  The goal is to provide access to quality online information

resources for all Wisconsin residents.”

YOU NEED A LIBRARY CARD FROM  A  WISCONSIN LIBRARY.

It can be tricky to access newspaper information on BadgerLink.

Watch the video and follow the steps below.

NewspaperARCHIVE has newspaper holdings from four centuries covering localities

throughout the United States. The site has issues from the Wisconsin State Journal

published in Madison Wisconsin for the years 1852 through 2009.

·         Newspaper Source Plus (EBSCO)

Newspaper Source Plus includes over 1,500 full-text newspapers and newswires, providing more than 27 million full-text articles. In addition, the database features more than 583,100 television and radio news transcripts, videos & podcasts. Nine Wisconsin newspapers are included.

This is an incredible site. You can access a fully searchable PDF file of most

local newspapers published in Wisconsin since 2005.

(These newspapers are available on a 60 day delay.)

Unfortunately the website can be difficult to use and can blow up for unknown reasons. WATCH VIDEOs

you combine the ability to translate selected text from books on www.books.google.com.

Thanks to a partnership between Google and the Bavarian State Library, many German newspapers from the

1800s on have been digitized and are available on books.google.com.

See WORKING WITH GERMAN LANGUAGE above how to easily translate these newspapers.

I have not found a complete list of the German newspapers digitized

and available on www.books.google.com.

The following are some of the newspapers I have found on Google.

The list is not complete and further descriptive information needs to be gathered about these newspapers.

NOTE:  Newspaper “books” on Google usually contain an entire year of newspapers.

Here are the main Google books options that I use.

They are found on left side of screen.

·         Full View  - this option displays only books that can be read in their entirety and downloaded

·         Grid view  - this shows more books on the computer screen, this is my preference

·         19th Century  or Custom range - this allows you to exclude recent documents

·         Click Related books - appears when you have selected a book to look at

·         Get it now  - ebooks - allows you to build your online library of Google books

·         Read on your device - an incredible way to download Google books to personal devices

                                     including iPads and other tables

Newspaper clippings created by individuals

Individuals have created personal collections of newspaper clippings. These can be harder to find on the Internet but they are worth the search.

Formal Digitizing Projects

Google is not the only organization digitizing library holdings.

Thousands of published family histories, city and county histories, historic city directories, and related records are coming to the Internet. The Allen County Public Library (ACPL) in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Brigham Young University Harold B. Lee Library, and FamilySearch's Family History Library in Salt Lake City announced the joint project today. When complete, it will be the most comprehensive collection of city and county histories on the Web—and access will be free at www.familyhistoryarchive.byu.edu.

Bob Dewel created a 9 volume set of books about Sauk County history. He had originally written these in The Baraboo Sun and The Baraboo News-Republic. A copy of this set was held by the Allen County Public Library and was digitized as part of the project. These personal collections are great if the person was a good editor.

Evernote

http://www.evernote.com/

Evernote is a phenomenal tool for newspaper clipping collections. My grandmother and my father created over 4500 pages of newspaper clippings. What's the best way to share this collection that doesn't have an index? Evernote solved my problems.

For about $50 a year, Evernote allows you to upload 1billion bytes of files to their site. I can give anybody FREE access to this online database. The really neat thing is that Evernote performs optical character recognition on the files that I upload. This creates a fully searchable index on all pages.
